Ford has focussed on economies of scale and implementing ‘One Ford’ strategy across markets. Alan Mulally, president and CEO of Ford Motor, is also making a lightning visit to India to showcase its small car in the middle of this week. He joined Ford in 2006 after divesting brands like Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin.This moment will be exciting and worth watching. Ford India has not had a new product launch, but continues to upgrade its existing product line since 2005.
Ford India will launch its small car, code named B517 in March 2010, which is expected to compete with the Hyundai i20 and the Maruti Swift, that were also showcased to its dealers in Chennai recently. The small car will be a four-door hatchback, powered by an indigenous diesel and petrol engine manufactured at its Chennai plant. Ford India has invested around $500 million (Rs 2,400 crore) to double the current capacity by one lakh cars and 2.5 lakh engines, company officials said.

After unveiling the Ford Figo in Delhi, Ford’s president and CEO, Alan Mulally said: “The global market is shifting towards smaller cars and India has a predominant advantage with a 70% market for compact cars." The company also has plans to export a significant number of the Ford Figo to Asia Pacific and African countries in 2010.

For 2009, Ford India aims to achieve sales of 30,000 cars compared to 29,000 cars sold in calendar 2008. "In September ‘09, we have been able to sell 3,500 cars which is a 50% increase year-on-year basis," said Nigel Wark, executive director (marketing, sales and services). Auto major Nissan has announced the launch of its long awaited sports car model Nissan 370Z in the Indian auto market. The senior company official disclosed that Nissan 370Z will be launched in the month of January 2010. A tradução aproximada da palavra tuning seria afinação ou optimização. Neste caso, e aplicado aos automóveis, o tuning é a arte de modificar o carro, tornando-o mais performante, mais seguro, mais bonito, diferente do original e único. O tuning é aplicável a praticamente todos os componentes de um carro: jantes, pneus, suspensão, motor, interior, carroçaria, sistema de escape, instalação áudio, etc.
Todos estes componentes podem ser revistos de forma a terem um comportamento superior ou um aspecto que torne um carro "de série" em algo exclusivo e único, que se adapte ao gosto e necessidades do utilizador. As alterações feitas, para além de ter preocupações estéticas, devem acrescentar características ao carro de forma a torná-lo mais performante mas também mais seguro. Com o tuning aplica-se ao automóvel um pouco da personalidade do seu dono.
Hoje em dia o termo tuning descreve e engloba todas as vertentes da preparação e modificação automóvel: preparação de motor (engine tuning), optimização electronica (chiptuning), preparação chassis (chassis tuning), alterações de carroçaria (customizingou carstyling), car audio e mais recentemente In-Car Enterteinment (ICE). O termo tuning descreve todas estas vertentes da alteração automóvel assim como o passatempo e o estilo de vida dos seus adeptos. Hoje em dia o tuning implica normalmente alterações visuais de forma a distinguir os carros dos demais, alterações de jantes por diâmetros maiores, kits de carroçaria, interiores totalmente revistos, rebaixamentos da carroçaria, etc.

História do Tuning
A arte de alterar automóveis é já bastante antiga, a sua origem mistura-se com a origem dos automóveis. Foi na década de 1910, praticamente quando se deu o grande aumento do número de automóveis e a sua produção em série, que as primeiras pessoas começaram a alterar os motores dos famosos Ford Modelo T para obter mais potência. Sempre houve e haverá assim, pessoas que não estão contentes com o que o desempenho e aspecto do seu automóvel. Depois da Segunda Guerra Mundial este movimento intensificou-se nos Estados Unidos e na Europa e surgiram as primeiras empresas dedicadas à preparação de carros e motores.
Um movimento que teve grande notoriedade foi o hot rodding. Surgiu na década de 1940, no final da guerra. Os jovens militares Americanos que regressavam ao país e com algum dinheiro, que gozavam alguma liberdade tinham disponíveis carros da década anterior a um preço bastante acessível. A indústria automóvel americana tinha estado dedicada a fornecer o exercito durante alguns anos e não tinha evoluido. Assim esses jovens, inicialmente na Califórnia, começaram a modificar os carros, introduzindo elementos que ainda hoje os caracterizam os hot-rods como o menor peso, maior potência, tejadilhos rebaixados, pneus largos, etc.
O nome Hot-rods provém da combinação de Roadster (rod) e Hot que significa quente. Anos mais tarde deu-se mais relevância ao aspecto e construíram-se alguns carros verdadeiramente virados para o show-off.
Com o tempo algumas empresas foram criadas especificamente para a preparação de carros, nos EUA e Europa, algumas delas criando nomes que ainda hoje são bastante conhecidos. Em meados da decade 80, e com o sucesso do campeonato alemão de Turismos (DTM) onde viaturas de produção competiam dando muito espectáculo, contribuiu de forma decisiva para o desenvolvimento do tuning no continente Europeu. Os vários trofeus monomarcas e campeonatos criados nos vários países contribuiram tambem para o desenvolvimento do tuning. Os adeptos de automóveis procuravam peças e componentes usados em competição e que dessem um aspecto parecido esteticamente ao do seu carro preferido de competição, pois algures haveria um BMW, um Mercedes, um Alfa Romeo, um Renault a competir que inspirava os utilizadores dos automóveis normais.
Cada país ou continente desenvolveu um estilo próprio e sub-culturas que se movem em torno de automóveis modificados. O mercado do tuning é hoje em dia um sector que movimenta muito dinheiro. O sucesso dos filmes da saga Fast and Furious contribui também para a divulgação do tuning a um publico onde não chegava antes.
